ABOUT

Cathy Niland is a ceramicist and artist living and working in Oakland, CA.

Her wheel-thrown ceramics—mostly slipware—are focused on function and finish. She sees each utilitarian piece she makes as a canvas on which to explore themes in repetition through carving and pattern work. Each finished piece should have a tactile quality that encourages interaction. She has explored themes of repetition in other mediums, such as drawing, since 2011.

Cathy is a 2012 graduate of Pratt Institute where she earned her BFA with a concentration in drawing and extended studies in ceramics. She also spent a semester studying conceptual video and installation art at Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts in London.

In 2018, Cathy began teaching courses at Merritt Ceramics. She also works in the marketing department at The Crucible, America’s largest non-profit industrial arts school.
